THE SETTING
It was the spring of 2023 during a heated discussion between some of the top doctors in the Rheumatology and Arthritis space and a popular healthcare vendor who specialized in Electronic Health Records (EHR/EMR) systems.
THE CONFLICT
The perpetual plea to coax the vendor to reduce clicks in the EHR, fix never-ending bugs, and add common-sense features was going nowhere. The practice was the largest of its kind in the country with over 70 providers, so surely they had enough clout to sway the vendor to make these improvements… or so they thought.
THE “ANTAGANIST” (i.e. government-mandated EHRs and clerical administration)
EHRs have become a necessary evil (often dominating our lunches and nights), but the rigidity and behemoth size of the EHR companies prevent them from being agile enough to listen to the complaints of just one customer, especially a niche specialty practice. The poor representatives were empathetic to their plight but helpless to do anything about it.
THE PLOT THICKENS
Enough was enough. An epic battle ensued with threats of finding another EHR, ultimatums, and open-mouthed bewilderment. It was the stuff of legends and was consequently recorded and shared with bemused employees and terrified sales teams at the EHR company to demonstrate how frustrated doctors can become with their health record systems. The simple truth was that the physicians just wanted to treat patients, not spend half their day clicking and typing away at a computer.
QUEUE THE PROTAGONIST
As tempers flared and the meeting ended, it was time for damage control. The CIO from the practice quickly contacted the reps to smooth things over. The practice wasn’t about to jump rashly to another EHR without giving them a chance to rectify the problem. He gave them suggestions of what an EHR should really look like and how they could improve it. That’s when he stumbled upon the million-dollar solution. An epiphany struck like lightening: Why not add those features himself?
THE SURPRISING CLIMAX
And thus, Chart Helper was formed. After fighting for years with multiple EHR vendors to improve their systems, we would do it for them. We created new technology never before seen in the industry to overlay additional features upon existing EHR systems to reduce the dreaded clicks and automate processes. Through inspiration and perspiration, we formulated the techniques to break through the barriers of entry to all EHR systems. We could now pull out and prioritize “real disease” from the record systems, address “red flags”, consolidate information, and make predictions.
Suddenly, the sobering realization hit us like a ton of bricks. We had discovered an untapped treasure trove of possibilities. Why couldn’t we use this new technology to bring the healthcare organizations together to cure cancer and other diseases, increase patient outcomes, offer healthcare to the underserved populations, and prevent physician burnout? We could become the “Amazon” of the healthcare industry, a disruptor, the biggest influence for good to healthcare since the discovery of penicillin. That was not the original intention that clear spring morning in 2023, but it has now become our driving mission, our obligation to share what we’ve learned with others. Our motivation changed from simply making money to truly and altruistically helping others. With your partnership, we will achieve the impossible. We will change the world for the better.
